Spencer Hall A high-end consumer research and brand consultancy, Spencer Hall has sumptuous, beautifully printed collateral. In 1998 they engaged me to create their first web site, with the proviso that the site live up to the standard set by their print pieces.
Because their brochures were so attractive and distinctively designed, I knew I would take as many cues as possible -- type, color, alignment -- from the print pieces. But I wanted to go farther, and do something no one else was doing (in 1998). I proposed a format that did not scroll vertically, and that displayed the logo and navigation at the bottom of each page, rather than the top or the left.
I carry this site along in my portfolio today because it was my first freelance job, because it was an unusual design for the time, and because it still clearly typifies my style: clean design, bold color, and careful attention to type.
